Intro to Classical Carving with Chuck Rinehart 18-3

A White Card is Not Required

If this class is full, please add yourself to the Waitlist so we can notify you about the next class.

Chuck Rinehart has been woodworking for 60 years and the last 30 have included an extensive background in Classical Carving.  This class sequence will be a hands-on opportunity to be guided by an expert.  Chuck has taught this class in Rochester, NY before moving to Portland in 2017.

The class is limited to six students because there is a lot of personal supervision and limited bench space.

This class requires a rather extensive investment in specific carving tools, and a detailed list will be emailed to registrants.  Chuck has arranged a good deal from Woodcarvers Supply in Florida for a complete kit for those who need a new set that will cost about $300 for 20 tools, a mallet and tool roll.  However, most students have some tools and need to buy ones that are missing, and those prices and sources will vary.

Recently the Guild Board approved acquiring several sets of the required carving tools and these might be available rent as an option for those who are sure yet whether they want to invest in the tools.

The four hours per session will give you time to carve and experience a variety of techniques.  Most of the class is you carving, with some demonstrations.

A two hour Orientation Session will be scheduled several weeks before the class to discuss the required tools, sharpening, and to answer questions.

The class will be held in six sessions at the Multnomah Art Center (MAC) on consecutive Saturdays from 10:00 to 2:00 PM, but you can arrive 15-30 minutes early to help setup.  You will be expected to do carving between sessions.  Practice exercises and two carving projects are planned, and they will expose you to a variety of tools and techniques.  The second one will be a quite complex Acanthus leaf and the first one will be preparation.

A paperback copy (used, out of print) book will be given to each student.  This will be the reference "textbook" we will use, called Woodcarving, The Beginners Guide by William Wheeler and Charles Hayward.

Students should plan to bring a snack; lunch will not be provided, but there will be drinks.

The class coordinator is Larry Wade, 503-312-7745 (text and cell); contact him for any questions.

In order to complete your registration payment must be made quickly, preferably online when registering, but no later than 7 days.
