Instructor: Asa Christiana

White Card Required

This hands-on skills class offers beginners and intermediates a safe, foolproof approach to the table saw, a fundamental woodworking tool. It will also cover safe, effective use of the chop saw (miter saw). This class will help you build the skills needed to prepare for the Hands-On Safety Test (HOST) that allows you to use these tools in the Guild shop. In this class each student will not only gain hands-on experience working on a real project. In this class each student will not only gain hands-on experience working on a real project, you will also go home with the handy letter tray pictured. It’s great place to throw the mail or store printer paper.   Asa is a past editor at Fine Woodworking and brings a wealth of experience in safe and fun woodworking practices.

You will learn the following:

·         Inherent dangers of the table saw (kickback and hand-to-blade contact), how accidents happen, and how to prevent them and work safely.

·         Specific safety features of the SawStop table saw and how to use it properly.

·         Where the table saw fits in the milling process, what it does well, and when it’s not appropriate.

·         Basic table saw setup for safe use (blade and rip fence parallel to miter slots, proper setup and use of riving knife, proper blade height, etc.).

·         Safe, accurate rip cuts.

·         Safe, accurate crosscuts, using the miter gauge for narrow pieces and a crosscut sled for wide  ones, as well as a work stop for matching pieces.

·         Safe, accurate slots and dado cuts.

·         Rabbet cuts and bevel cuts using an auxiliary rip fence.

·         Reading and interpreting a project plan.

·         Basic layout techniques.

·         Safe, effective use of the miter saw.

·         An easy approach to box construction using taped miter joints.

Students should bring: tape measure, combination square, sharp pencil, sandpaper (120, 150, and 220-grit, plus sanding block of some kind), and safety gear (ear, lung & eye protection—glasses are OK).

The goal of this class is for each student to go home with a letter tray and some basic table and miter saw skills in preparation for the HOST.

The class fee includes material for the class. The Guild will also provide a measured drawing of letter tray and take-home guide to key principles and guidelines taught in class.
