INTEREST LIST - not a class (yet)

Register your interest in taking the six week class to introduce you to Classical Carving.

      Instructor- Chuck Rinehart

Chuck Rinehart has now taught this class four times for us, and has taught it many times before at his former club in Rochester, NY.

Tool sets of eleven carving tools are available to rent for $50 for the class plus an extra month, and unless you have your own tools, or intend to buy them (about $200-400), we encourage you to rent and focus instead on learning to carve.

The class will be three sessions, each four hours, spaced roughly once a week.

COST of the class is $180, including materials, but not the tools. It's free to sign up on this interest list.  You will need to buy or borrow the Chris Pye book called "Woodcarving Course & Reference Manual", about $15 from a variety of sources, including Amazon, Powell's and Woodcrafters.

The class outline is:

Week 1:  Tools nomenclature and handling, grain exercise (the donut), and exercises from Chapter 4 of Pye's book

Week 2:  Review of homework, discuss the V tool (aka parting tool, #12 or #41), and the small veiner (#11/3), and do the Pye Burhead Bull project in Chapter 7 using both.  Demo relieving the background using a large #11/16, trace the outline of your shallow leaf project, and get started with your homework.

Week 3:  Arrive with your leaf project background complete and carve the leaf.
