Band Saw Clinic

Instructor: Chip Webster

White Card Required

The band saw can be one of the most versatile, accurate and safe machines in your workshop – providing it is set up and used properly.  New or even a well used 14” band saw with a ½ HP motor can be tuned to cut precision joints or re-saw flawlessly without purchasing aftermarket accessories or expensive blades.

Proper setup of the saw, including selecting and setting blade tension and tracking, as well as simple enhancements you can make to improve the performance of your saw will be covered in the morning. We’ll move on to technique as taught by Michael Fortune, practicing cutting to the line, cutting curves and re-sawing. A variety of useful jigs designed to be used with the band saw will be demonstrated.  Illustrations will be provided so you can make your own. A Green Card is not required for this class.

This class is based on the band saw clinic Michael Fortune taught in 2015 and 2016 for the Guild of Oregon Woodworkers. Michael operates one of the most diversely equipped workshops in North America.   It includes three industrial table saws but he can’t remember the last time he ripped a piece of wood on a table saw.  Instead he prefers to use a 15” General International band saw.  He purchased this band saw in 1974, tracked the blade once with only modest tension, installed a factory fence parallel to the miter slot and has not had to adjust it in 40 years. The class will be taught at the Guild shop using the Jet 20” band saw and the Grizzly 14” band saw. The differences in the Felder band saw will be addressed.

Materials and lunch are included. If you have questions please contact the class coordinator: Ken Hall, ken@old-scholls.com.
