Letter Carving with Mary May - Signs and Personalization 19-1

This two day, hands-on class will focus on carving letters as a means to enhance your own furniture and perhaps create your own signs.  Font styles will include cursive as well as straight (Roman) letters.  Everyone will carve the same lettering the first day using Basswood, but on the second day you will be able to create your own lettering and practice carving on the hardwood if you choose.  The photos above are examples of possible lettering.

The class is for advanced beginners and intermediate level carvers.  You must have some prior experience with long handled tools, using a mallet, working with and understanding grain, and keeping your tools sharp.  Success with Chuck Rinehart's Foundations of Classical Carving class provides this experience.

COST of the session is $350, including materials and lunch, but you must provide your own tools (must be sharp).  The list of tools is below.  They are long-handled, mallet-ready tools which can be purchased at local suppliers (Woodcraft or Woodcrafters) or online.  Some carving tools and complete kits are available to rent from the Guild.

The tools list is (using Swiss Made/Pfeil numbering):

1/14 and 1/22 (plus bring other wide-ish #1's that you might have)

12/3 and 12/6 (v tools, 60 degrees)

3/6 and 3/14 (if Sheffield, these are usually 4/6 and 4/14)

5/6 and 5/14 (if Sheffield, double check on numbering)

7/6 and 7/10

plus bring any other gouges you might already own.

The sweep widths can vary a little.

If you have any questions, please contact Larry Wade at  The class coordinator is Heidi McNamee, and can be reached at

A different cancellation policy applies to this class.  Thirty (30) days advance notice is required to cancel in order to get a refund unless your slot is filled by someone else. However, cancellation within seven days forfeits payment.

This session is open to Guild members and non-members who meet the prerequisites.  If interested or curious about Guild membership please visit the Membership webpage and consider Joining.
