Build a Bottle Caddy & Build Your Skills – A Hands-on Basics Band Saw Class

Instructor: Asa Christiana

White Card Required

This hands-on skills class offers beginners and intermediates a safe, foolproof approach to the band saw, a fundamental woodworking tool. It will also cover safe, effective use of the drill press and variety of benchtop sanders.  This class will help you build the skills needed to prepare for the Hands-On Safety Test (HOST) that allows you to use these tools in the Guild shop. In this class each student will not only gain hands-on experience working on a real project, you will also go home with the stylish bottle caddy pictured!  Asa is a past editor at Fine Woodworking and brings a wealth of experience in safe and fun woodworking practices.

You will learn the following:

·         When to use the band saw and why.

·         Foolproof band saw setup (blade selection, changing a blade, adjusting guides, etc.).

·         Reading and interpreting a project plan.

·         Basic layout techniques using a combo square and compass.

·         Standard band saw cuts (simple cuts against fence, tall resaw cuts, freehand straight a curved cuts that follow a line).

·         Safe, effective use of the drill press.

·         Safe effective use of edge sander, spindle sander, and disk sander.

·         Strong joints with nails

The goal of this class is for each student to go home with a bottle caddy and some basic band saw skills.

The class fee includes material (wood & parts) for the class. The Guild will also provide hand-outs and a drawing of the caddy.
