Fundamentals of Fine Craftsmanship with Asa Christiana

During his 15 years at Fine Woodworking, eight as its chief editor, Asa Christiana encountered every woodworking technique under the sun, and was in the unique position to see which ones work best, and which ones readers actually used. This series presents best practices for every stage in the life of a furniture project: from refining the design to choosing wood, sharpening and tuning tools, prepping stock, cutting joints, assembly and surface prep, to a foolproof finish that will work wonderfully on 98% of the projects you build.

No matter what level of woodworker you are, you need a strong, flat surface to work on, with a solid woodworking vise for holding work vertically. While there is nothing wrong with attempting a massive, traditional workbench a la Tage Frid or André Roubo, those big benches are brutal to build, especially for beginners.

In this all-day class, former Fine Woodworking editor Asa Christiana will help woodworkers of all levels build the simple but very solid workbench he presented in his award-winning video series, Getting Started in Woodworking. In fact, he still uses a version of this bench today in his Portland shop.

Using basic tools, absolutely anyone can build this bench. The base is made from kiln-dried Doug fir construction lumber, connected with a simple bolt system, while the top is a double-layer of MDF with a bolt-on vise attached.

Our goal is to have every attendee go home with a workbench, along with simple instructions on how to mount a vise and drill dog holes in the top. There will be lots of teamwork, and we’ll all be good friends by the end of the day.

All materials will be supplied except a vise. The instructor will provide guidance on the type of vise to purchase as well as demonstrate installing the vise. Lunch will be provided.
