Japanese Bowl Carving and Texturing

      Instructor- Masa Nitani

This class is for those with some carving experience, and a decent range of carving tools, either long handled or palm.  Most importantly, you must have sharp tools, either by yourself or a friend or helper.

Masa has not taught for us before so the early classes will be a bit of a learning experience for him and us.  The class structure will likely evolve after the first few.  Masa mainly teaches by demo and coaching, not lecture, so you must be willing to work in this format.  We will have a video camera projecting closeups of his hands and work for all to see.

Masa Nitani has fifty years of carving experience and is now retired, having moved to Portland in 1983 from northern Japan, where he was apprenticed for three years.  Masa made his living here doing a variety of construction and specialty restoration projects, but has done carving all along the way.

If you have taken Chuck's Foundations class those tools should work.  Masa uses mostly Japanese derived tools, many with his own handle designs, along with a few UK western tools but we don't expect you to purchase Japanese tools, or make your own.

His English is OK, but not great, but he communicates well.  He likes to demonstrate his techniques irrespective of any design and wants to help you learn techniques so you can apply them to your own design.  This class is expected to be a combination of demonstration and practice, but is expected to result in a finished bowl but whether that happens depends mostly on your starting skills and the time you are willing to work between sessions..

Prior carving experience is required and taking Chuck's Intro class first is recommended.

COST of the class includes materials, but not the tools. The plan is to provide each student with a block of interesting Maple or Walnut 4" thick x 8" wide x 12" long for their bowl.
