Guild Instructor Forum – Exploring How We Learn Best
Instructor: Doug Stowe
The Guild of Oregon Woodworkers Education Committee is pleased to offer a unique opportunity to participate in a free exchange of ideas entitled Exploring How We Learn Best. The purpose of this event is to promote a better understanding of how our membership learns material in which they have an interest so as to provide a better learning/teaching experience for all. This event is open to all Guild instructors and members who have, or think they may have, an interest in becoming a Guild instructor.
Noted author and instructor Doug Stowe will facilitate this event. Doug recently published his new book entitled “The Wisdom of Our Hands – Crafting, a Life” imparting the lessons and research from his 40 years of experience as a box maker, author and teacher to children and adults of all ages.
The Guild will provide copies of his recent book for reading in preparation for this event. Lunch will, also be provided. Please contact Chip Webster if you’d like to join this free forum and obtain a copy of Doug's book.
Prior to the student workshops, this study/sharing session has the intention of increasing teacher confidence and effectiveness, which will begin with brainstorming our individual experiences in learning and teaching. Participants will be invited to observe the instruction of students during the workshops, and to a follow-up session to debrief and review the observations and lessons learned from the previous sessions. Please note that this is not a seminar on class management.
This event will be conducted in four parts:
We will begin with a morning session Sunday, March 19, 9 AM – 12:30 PM, prior to the student workshops, in which we will brainstorm and share our individual experiences learning subject matter, as well as our observations regarding how students learn.
In an afternoon session, Sunday, March 19, 1PM - 5 PM, a smaller group of instructors will be asked to help build jigs and necessary fixtures for the student workshops.
We will invite instructors to come and observe the instruction of students during the student workshops March 20, 21 and March 22, 23, 9 AM – 5 PM, (these will be scheduled during the afternoon session in 2. Above), and
We will have a follow-up session, scheduled the afternoon of March 23rd, to debrief and review the observations and lessons learned from the previous sessions.
