Prerequisites: Intro to Guild Safety class. 

Learn how to restore a metal, Bailey style bench plane from a rusty hulk to a finely tuned hand tool.
Bring your own plane or buy one at the class. Ken will have planes for sale for about $10. This is an opportunity to create a lifelong tool. You will learn how to remove rust safely and prepare your plane for use. You will be shown how to finely tune your plane so that it is capable of creating fine, flat surfaces on your wood.

Class Outline

  • Learn how to identify used bench planes that are suitable for restoration
  • Learn the features and parts of Bailey style bench planes
  • Learn what features make a Bailey style bench plane easy to use
  • Learn how to flatten the sole of your plane
  • Clean and tune-up the frog and lever cap & adjust the cap lever screw
  • Learn how to sharpen the blade of your plane
  • How to repair and refinish handles
  • How to care for and use bench planes

Student should bring:

  • Iron, Bailey style bench plane
  • Screw drivers (medium and large size)
  • 12 inch straight edge
  • Sharpening tools (optional, if you want to use your own) 
  • Your Personal Protective Equipment (Ear, Eye and lung protection).

The Guild will provide restoration expendables and tools.

  • Have your COVID vaccination on file in the shop computer. If not, email it to carol.boyd@guildoforegonwoodworkers.org within 3 days of the class or your registration will be canceled.
  • You are in good health, not living with anyone who is ill, have not been exposed to anyone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days
  • We require an N-95 for dust protection in the shop and are following Oregon Health Authority guidelines for workplace COVID safety in order to keep the health of our shop users safe.
