Masa is an experienced Japanese carver and woodworker who taught workshops for us before the pandemic.
This class will cover a variety of texturing techniques that you can apply to your own projects later. The texturing on the photos above show examples of hair, scales, and repeating pattern of what we'll explore.
Basswood and hardwood will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own wood. Most texturing will be done on Basswood, and we will use a hardwood board to create shallow textured channels following its grain patterns, or you can pursue alternatives suggested by Masa.
Bring your own tools, but some in the club's tool library are available to use. You will need a V tool in the range of 6-10mm. You will need a handful of the steeper #7 to #11 sweeps with sizes ranging from 1/8" to 3/4", but there is nothing specific. Don't buy any new tools prior to the class.
Guild of Oregon Woodworker members must have completed the INTRO TO GUILD SAFETY class and can register yourself as normal.
Oregon Carving Guild members and others should review the CARVING SAFETY MANUAL, sign a liability waiver at the class, and present proof of Covid vaccination at the class.
Check out the Guild of Oregon Woodworkers Scholarship Program to see if you qualify.
