Intro to Hammer Veneering - 23-1
Instructor - Jeff Hilber
Assistant - TBA
Prerequisite: Introduction to Guild Safety class.
Are you new to veneer or lack thin-wood experience? Hammer veneering is an efficient, low-tech approach to reliably veneering anything from donuts to bowling balls.
This is a hands-on, hand tools only session taught by a professional woodworker. This is not a beginning woodworking class but IS a beginning veneering class. If you are brand new to woodworking please contact Jeff Hilber to determine if this is the right class for you.
This age-old technique of manually applying thin, decorative wood to a substrate has been around since 5,000 BCE. The class will cover the history of veneer and furniture, how to handle and organize veneer, layout techniques, adhesive choices, preparing the substrate, jointing and taping patterns together, using the hammer to adhere veneer to a substrate. (Hint: it isn’t really a hammer). We will also cover repair techniques.
Hammer veneering is the prerequisite to a more advanced veneering class using a vacuum bag.
Project material provided: Substrate, veneer, adhesives, pattern ideas. Students will assemble their own veneer hammers and complete their veneered project in class.
Student equipment list: 12" or longer straight edge, Rotarty type cutter, Exacto knife or similar, (see photo), recommended cutting mat. The cutter and mat can be found at fabric sores, and craft stores, too.
