Intro to Woodworking & Furniture Design - Wood, Hand Tools and Joinery
Instructor: Helen Helfand
Class Assistant: El Cook
Prerequisite: Core Tool Certification and some hand tool experience.
Join us for classes 3-7 of Intro to Woodworking & Furniture Design. We will move from our understanding of wood as a material into learning how to design furniture in wood, and making our first piece.
We will refresh students on the hand tool skills from the first two classes of the series. We will spend time designing our pieces and planning the customizations each student would like to include.
We will discuss the many considerations to make when designing a new piece, and prepare you to think like a woodworker and furniture designer. From drawing to model-making, choosing wood to the milling process, cutting our joinery by hand and with machines, sanding and gluing up, you will get an overview of the process of bringing a piece from idea to reality. Materials will be provided.
PPE required: hearing protection, safety glasses, dust mask (as needed), closed-toed shoes.
Students should also bring: a fine point mechanical pencil and a tape measure. If you have your own combination square and marking knife, bring them, however, the Studio has plenty to use.
