Hand planes need a special screwdriver?

    It is a very handy tool for the screws  that are found on the cap irons of planes, especially if you are trying to remove rusted screws from an old plane blade. They are not very helpful for other uses.

    The most important thing about other screwdrivers for use on planes is that the thickness of the screwdriver blade is a tight fit in the slot whenever the screw is stuck in place.

    Ryan,

    I had the same question that you did but decided to splurge and buy the Lie Neilson screwdriver designed for the specific purposes you mention.  While I am sure that my other screwdrivers could do the same job, my hand goes automatically to the Lie Neilson when I am seeking to tighten a frog as well as other things like their honing guide and some other planes.  The slitted head is thicker, the shaft is long and sturdy and the handle feels sooo good in the hand.  

    Can you live without it?  Definitely.  Will you regret buying it?  I don’t!

    Hi there! I just accidentally discovered that some places make and sell special screwdrivers for hand planes (the handle/tote, the frog, the iron). 

    Have I been doing things wrong and using a “normal” flat bladed screwdriver to adjust/disassemble/assemble my hand planes? If the answer is “yes” can you say a bit more about why that is so?

    I’m seeking an education on the subject. Thanks!
